Kale: Red Russian

Description

This kale’s names – Red Russian or Ragged Jack – provide an indication of its growth habits. Burgundy red ribs extend into ragged purple blue and green leaves which are shaped in a rosette. Red Russian kale offers a mild nutty flavor that is slightly sweet and earthy with a hearty texture. It grows all year round in South Africa but prefers cooler weather, so much so that the red really develops in its leaves. It grows between 30 and 50 cm tall and will usually last at least two years in the garden. 

Kale is full of nutrients including vitamin C, iron, vitamin A, calcium, magnesium, potassium, protein, carbohydrates and dietary fibre. There is a good reason that it is so popular amongst the health conscious.
