Chilli pepper: Rocoto Red

R40.00 incl VAT

This variety is from Peak Week Pods. JC Terblanche says: ‘This is an interesting Peruvian heirloom variety. It is also known as ‘Tree Pepper’ it can take up more space than the usual chilli plant. Rocoto is one of the best overwinter varieties and is cold-hardy, producing almost all year round. The plants have slightly furry leaves, unlike other peppers. They produce beautiful pendulous purple flowers that are followed by green pods that eventually turn red. Their growth habits are similar to other chillis but the seeds of the Rocoto Red are black, as opposed to most peppers which have cream/yellow seeds. Each pod has a different heat level with some having a good burn and others that will bring you to your knees! The best uses for these are to make sauces, and salsas and to add to stews. They are not recommended for drying into powder as they hold lots of water in their thick walls.’
