Cucamelon (mouse melon)
R40.00 incl VAT
This variety is from Peak Week Pods. JC Terblanche says: ‘Melothria scabra, commonly known as the cucamelon, Mexican miniature watermelon, Mexican sour cucumber, Mexican sour gherkin, mouse melon, or penguins, is a species of flowering plant in the cucurbit family grown for its edible fruit. Its native range spans Mexico to Venezuela. Fruits are about the size of grapes and taste like cucumbers with a tinge of sourness. It has been eaten by indigenous peoples since before Western colonization of the Americas began. In more temperate climates they can be perennial and will form a tube at the bottom of the plant where they will grow out from again in spring. This is very rare and much sought after and quality seeds are hard to come by. We use the correct methods of saving cucamelon seeds which help with germination rates each season. This will be one of the highlights in your garden and you will have enough to share as the plant’s climb and sprawl everywhere and produces lots of fruit. One of our favourites to grow if not the favourite. Limited stock as we have eaten most of them!’
