Chilli pepper: Berbere (Ethiopian Brown)
R40.00 incl VAT
This variety is from Peak Week Pods. JC Terblanche says: ‘Here is some spiciness from Africa! Though the name says it’s ‘brown’, this chilli looks more chocolate-coloured. Its strong plants produce many well-sized green pods that colour up to an amazing mahogany brown with a faded matt effect. Broad pods are anything from 6 to 10 cm. They have a few curves and are slightly wrinkled and have very thin walls, which makes them ideal for drying to use as to make a dry rub seasoning, flakes or an interesting chilli powder. They have a unique smokiness to them and even a hint of sweetness. The medium heat is manageable and won’t surpass 50,000 SHU, but you’ll know it’s a chilli. This African heirloom grows very well in our conditions, produces a good amount of pods, looks exotic and can be used in several ways.’
