Pole bean: Lohrey’s Old Tasmanian

R30.00 incl VAT

This variety is from Peak Week Pods. JC Terblanche says: ‘Since the early 1900s this bean has been grown by the Lohrey family  in northwestern Tasmania. It is also called Lohrey’s Zebra, Lohrey’s Special, and Natural Salt (as it reputed to have a naturally salty flavour). The plants are of pole type and will be more productive when offered a structure to climb up. Their pods are slightly flattened, and stringless. Green pods often have a purple stripe down their seam, and turn yellow and get a red blush and/or streaks as they mature. They are easily shelled when dry, with 5 to 7 seeds per pod. The seeds are flattened and slightly curved. Freshly-shelled seeds are white and navy blue, drying to light brown with black stripes. This is a great dual-purpose bean that can be used as green beans or dried, but we prefer the latter.’
