Bean: Winged beans/Asparagus peas

This variety is from Peak Week Pods. JC Terblanche says: ‘What a rarity!  Asparagus Peas are also known as Winged beans and they come in a few different sizes and colours. To be clear, these are the smaller green ones with maroon flowers. We haven’t tasted the asparagus flavour that these peas are described as having. These peas are summer crops and are not sown at the same time as usual peas. They have a sprawling habit but do not send out vines or runners. They ideally do better in a half sun/half-shade conditions and love lots of water. They also make a great crop for growing in pots. The pods reach 3 to 5 cm long and should be picked when they are still tender. They are great additions to any other dish that has a good sauce for these to soak up. We love them in stir-fries, as they don’t have any prominent taste in themselves. This isn’t something you would find in any supermarket or shop, so grow your own and experience a well-regarded Asian ingredient.’
