Poppy – Flanders

R30.00 incl VAT

This variety is from Kirchhoffs.

(Please note that the Flanders/corn poppy is toxic to horses, cattle and sheep, but not humans. It’s important to differentiae the varieites of poppies when planting in your garden. The opium poppy (papaver somniferum) is very poisonous to humans and animals.

This poppy is also known as corn poppy. It is a very showy, easy to grow and spectacular in early spring and late winter. Great for cutting too. Poppies are available as annual or perennials.

With its brilliant scarlet flowers, usually with a black blob at the base of the petals, this poppy needs no introduction as the single, red, cup-shaped flower is the classic poppy bloom.

Papaver rhoeas offer a profusion of flowers from June through to September and are a good choice for a bright splash of colour with no maintenance. In more recent times, the corn poppy has become the symbol of Remembrance Day as it was the flower which grew on the fields of Flanders after battles of the First World War (1914-18).
