Egg plant: Black Beauty
R35.00 incl VAT
Brinjal (egg plant, aubergine, melanzane …) are long-season plants so sow your seeds as early as possible.
These teardrop beauties will provide long, slim fruit, ready to slice into stir-fries or stews, baked or grilled, or popped onto a braai and slathered with olive oil and freshly-cracked pepper … yum!
The flowers turn to fruit quickly so keep an eye on them and pick when still young for best flavour. (No salt treatment required.)
Brinjals love sun, good soil and feeding. They can get top heavy when fruiting and are also brittle in a strong wind so staking will help support them. Grow them in-ground or in a large container. They should germinate in 7 to 14 days with 50 to 55 days from transplant to harvest.
Did you know? Brinjals are thought to have originated in Japan.
