Pole bean: Scarlet Runner

This variety is from Peak Week Pods. JC Terblanche says: ‘This is probably one of the most popular and widely grown runner beans around. The quick-growing plants vine up to anything they can get hold of and reach heights of 3.5 m in no time. As the name suggests, this variety produces red/orange flowers in masses that in turn form into 20 to 30 cm pods that are best picked when young. These plants are very beneficial in the garden as they lure pollinators to your garden. Scarlet Runner will produce pods as long as you pick them. The flowering sometimes pauses in the extreme summer heat but will start again as soon as it cools down again. The beans itself have different colours as they mature and when fully dry, the large, plump black and lilac beans make for great eating, especially in soups.’
