Runner bean: Lazy Housewife
R25.00 incl VAT
This bean’s name is surely ironic, and may refer to how the bean suits cooks who don’t want to bother stringing green beans.
This bean is a handy addition to your kitchen garden – not only because it produces easy-to-prepare beans but also because the plants themselves create shade and shelter for other plants below when they are supported by canes or trellises.
LH is a productive plant known for its delicious, stringless green beans produced almost endlessly once the plant eventually matures (75 days).
Harvesting encourages the plant to produce more. And if you don’t get to pick them, you can leave them to become dry beans in the pod for winter soups etc.
Plant in good soil. However, these nitrogen-fixing legumes will help improve the soil just by growing in it, and are excellent to include in your bed rotation plans. A win in anyone’s book!
Did you know? Beans are one of the world’s oldest cultivated food plants (on all continents except for Antarctica) and are an important source of protein for humans and animals to this day.
