It turns milk into a creamy, sour, slightly effervescent concoction that gives the final product a complex deliciousness. Yes, the flavour takes a bit of getting used to but it’s worth it. The lactobacilli in kefir survive stomach acid and get to the other side where they help populate your gut with good bugs.

You can use kefir as it is, and in all recipes that require yoghurt and buttermilk – just add more milk to adjust consistency if needs be. And if you place a batch of mature kefir in muslin to drain the curds, you can create a lovely soft cheese. 

Your kefir grains aren’t sent dry, and don’t need rehydrating when they arrive … you just need to open up the jar, add some whole milk (not UHT), cover the jar with the cotton muslin round we provide, and leave it at room temperature. In a few days, you’ll have your first batch of kefir to enjoy. We’re really pleased with the variety of kefir that we supply – it has lovely fluffy grains and the flavour is delicious. 

Your kefir starter kit consists of a Consol preserve jar and a tablespoon of grains. Although the jar will be sealed just before dispatch, it’s important to open up the jar as soon as you receive it so that the kefir can carry on as before.

  • A portion of kefir grains (between 1 t and 1T) in fresh full cream milk 
  • Consol jar with lid and ring, and a round of cotton muslin
  • An instruction leaflet
