Granadilla (Ester cultivar)

R50.00 incl VAT

Ester granadilla produces fruit more evenly throughout the year than the other edulis granadillas. There is, however, a light peak harvesting season from mid-December to mid-January, which is later than the other edulis granadillas.

Our plants are from a commercial producer where they are grown within a biosecure structure to ensure that the plants remain virus-free. They are grown from cuttings and are delivered to us as rooted plugs – we grow them on from there, making them ready for your garden.

Description

These vines are supplied in 6 litre bags.

A must-have in all gardens where frost isn’t an issue, the granadilla vine (Passiflora edulis) is native to Paraguay, Brazil and northern Argentina. In South Africa, granadillas are produced commercially in Mpumalanga and Limpopo Province, as well as in the subtropical coastal areas of KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape. They do, however, grow very well in the Western Cape too.

The Ester cultivar was discovered in 1995 by JC Esterhuysen on his farm near Polokwane and is known for its high yield:

  • The first fruit can be ready for harvesting about 6 months after planting (optimal conditions);
  • An orchard planted in early spring in the Limpopo province could yield 15 tons per ha by mid-summer;
  • Yields of 40 tons per ha in the second year have been recorded in the Polokwane area.

Generally, Ester granadillas produce fruit more evenly throughout the year than other edulis varieties. There is, however, a light peak harvesting season from mid-December to mid-January, which is later than the other edulis granadillas.

Our plants are sourced from a commercial producer where they are grown within a biosecure structure to ensure that the plants remain virus-free.

We can deliver this plant in George without charge if your order is more than R200. We send plants by courier nationwide as long as you appreciate that there is risk of damage or failure in transit. Some plants are sent already potted, while others are supplied bare root, but carefully wrapped. As with all plants that travel in less than ideal conditions (they’d rather be growing quietly in a garden, after all), please tend to your new plants as soon as you are able. Refresh them, plant them and enjoy them.
